A little bit of history...
Attree & Kent is understandably proud of its history as the City's oldest Funeral Directors, dating back to 1780.
Records dating from 1824, unfortunately earlier records are not held by the Company, were recently discovered in an attic above the former premises in Church Street and have now been deposited with the East Sussex Record Office for safe keeping, having first been displayed in a public exhibition.
Local historians have been delighted by the discovery of the records, which give a complete picture of the businesses activity over the past 160 years. They also provide an interesting insight into the social trends of the mid nineteenth century onwards. They are a truly valuable social historical resource.
In addition to being undertakers, Attree & Kent was also an auctioneers and valuers. The records provide comprehensive details of the various properties in Brighton & Hove, together with minute books and Company records to complete the picture.
